How long can an active shooter incident last?
Typically, active shooter incidents last anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. During that time, split-second decisions can mean the difference between life and death. Depending on how long it takes for emergency responders to arrive at a location, there may be additional delays in help. This means preparation is extremely important.
What is the best thing to do in the event of an active shooter?
If possible, the best thing to do is run. Evacuate the of the shooting and allow emergency services to handle the situation. If running is impossible or would put you in more danger, then hiding is the next best option. Fighting the shooter is the last resort but may be necessary if no other options are available.
What should I do when law enforcement arrives on the scene?
The purpose of law enforcement is to stop the shooter. When they arrive, do not run toward them. Allow them to enter the building and stop the shooter. You should exit the building in the direction the law enforcement officers entered. This allows you to exit through a secure area.
