Onsite Training

Onsite training is for companies looking for Tugger hands-on training at your location. We come to you (from Rexburg, Idaho) so travel expenses are included, because of this onsite training is best for groups of at least 5-10+ trainees.

What's in the Tugger Training Course?

Our tugger training course is regulation compliant, and our online version fulfills classroom training requirements. Each class contains sections on anatomy and inspection, safe operations, and common hazards.
This presentation includes intermittent practice quiz questions to prepare for the final written exam included with the course. In addition to the written exam, this course also includes a checklist for employers to use when administering a practical exam as required by OSHA.
Estimated Training Length: Because everyone learns and progresses at different speeds, the amount of time you spend taking this training will vary. However, the estimated time for this training is 1 – 1.5 hours.
Intended Audience:

  • Employees

Though you will still need to familiarize yourself with all other applicable federal, state, and local standards, this training encompasses the following laws and regulations:

  • Encompasses these U.S. Standards
  • 29 CFR 1910.178 – Powered Industrial Trucks

  • ANSI/ITSDF B56.8 – Safety Standard for Personnel and Burden Carriers

  • NFPA 505 – Fire Safety Standard for Powered Industrial Trucks

  • UL 583 – Standard for Safety for Electric-Battery-Powered Industrial Trucks

  • OSHA Act of 1970, 5(a)(1) – General Duty Clause

  • Canada Standards
  • CAN/CSA-B335-04 – Safety Standard for Lift Trucks

  • CAN/CSA-B335-94 – Lift Truck Operator Training

  • ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 – Safety Standard for Low Lift & High Lift Trucks

Tugger Train the Trainer Certification

The train the trainer option is used to certify a trainer to teach others using the included training kit. It incorporates the online course with an additional train the trainer module, as well as the training kit. This option results in an OSHA compliant lifetime trainer certification from Hard Hat Training. This certification is not company-specific, meaning you can take it with you should you change employers.

Tugger Competent Person Training

OSHA defines a “competent person” as someone who “is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in [their] surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees.” A competent person has the authorization to take “prompt corrective measures” to minimize or eliminate hazards. They have enough training and/or experience to be “capable of identifying workplace hazards relating to the specific operation and has the authority to correct them.”

Some standards do have additional, specific requirements that must be met in order for an employee to be considered a competent person. Our Competent Person option fulfills these specific requirements.

Why do I need Tugger training?

In line with regulations, anyone who operates tuggers must receive training prior to operating the machine on their own. Requirements for refresher training related to forklifts or other processes are very specific. Most other equipment doesn’t have such specific requirements, but it’s wise to follow the same guidelines.
When it comes to refresher training, the standards in some instances (like forklifts) are very specific: operators must be re-evaluated every three years to see if they are still competent to operate the equipment. Best practices say to apply this same rule to all types of equipment. A so-called “free-pass” cannot be awarded based on experience, age, or time on the job. The extent of the evaluation is to be determined by the employer but should include a written and practical examination that prove continued competency.

  • Powered industrial trucks are used to move, raise, lower, or remove large objects or many small objects on pallets or in boxes, crates, or other containers. (OSHA)

  • Most employee injuries involving powered industrial trucks can be attributed to a lack of safe operating procedures, lack of safety-rule enforcement, and insufficient or inadequate training. (University of Maryland)
