What Are Skid Steers?
A skid steer, also known as a skid loader or wheel loader, is a small, versatile piece of construction equipment that is commonly used for digging. It’s lightweight and maneuverable, and its arms may be attached to a variety of tools for various different tasks.
What Is It Used For?
The skid steer’s distinguishing feature is its multitude of attachment choices, which allows it to do a wide range of duties with the same piece of equipment. A bucket is the conventional attachment for a skid steer, but operators can swap it out for any number of alternatives, allowing a skid steer to perform the functions of many various types of equipment. Traditionally, operators utilize the bucket of a skid steer to lift or transport large materials. Some of the most common uses for skid steers are:
- Clearing snow
- Excavating
- Construction
- Landscaping
- Trenching and digging

Why Do I Need Skid Steer Safety Training?
In line with regulations, anyone who operates heavy equipment must receive training prior to operating the machine on their own. Requirements for refresher training and other processes are very specific. Most other equipment doesn’t have such specific OSHA training requirements, but it’s wise to follow the same guidelines.
When it comes to refresher health and safety training, the standards in some instances (like forklifts) are very specific: operators must be re-evaluated every three years to see if they are still competent to operate the equipment. Best practices say to apply this same rule to all types of equipment. A so-called “free-pass” cannot be awarded based on experience, age, or time on the job. The extent of the evaluation is to be determined by the employer but should include a written and practical examination that prove continued competency.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a skid steer weight?
Typically the most common skid steers weigh between 2000 lbs to 10,500 lbs! Learn more!
Why is it called a skid steer?
The skid steer gets its name from the way that it turns. Instead of turning the wheels or tracks themselves, the speed of each side can be controlled independently. This causes the machine to drag or skid across the ground instead of turning like a car.
Can you remove trees with a skid steer?
Yes. There is even an attachment that can be used specifically for pulling trees or stumps out of the ground. Just make sure that you are using the correct attachment.
How many skid steer attachments are there?
There are a countless number of skid steer attachments. There are around 50 attachments in use currently, though there is always innovation happening in the manufacturing companies.
How deep can a skid steer dig?
All skid steers are capable of digging about three feet deep, though some larger options can dig as deep as five feet.
Can a skid steer flip over backward?
Yes. If the machine is carrying an uneven load or travelling with a raised bucket, the center of gravity is altered, and the machine can tip either forward or backward. The machine can even tip sideways if it is on a slope or otherwise carrying an uneven load.

Sam D. –
Course content was good, also engaging. Course is glitchy and kicks you back to the beginning multiple times, timelines given at the start are inaccurate by a factor of hours, if you want to take a break and pause the course, it starts you off very close to the beginning and you have tp retake the whole course again, help line offers no recompense unless you take pictures of your process the entire way through, and then only give you a default 80% passing mark.
Hard Hat Training –
Thanks for taking the time to rate the course, Sam. We’re so sorry that your experience wasn’t very positive. If you ever have troubles with a course being glitchy, don’t hesitate to reach out to us and we can look at your account more closely to determine what the cause may be. Most of the time, it can be due to connection issues, but if it is the course itself, we need to be sure to correct it. You can always reach us at info@safetyprovisions.com or (208) 252-5331. Thanks again for taking the time to let us know about your experience.

It is good to have these points in mind for active shooter situations. Knowing how to behave upon the arrival of law officers and emergency medical personnel really helps makes a bad situation better indeed.

Thank you, Brad, for taking the time to rate us on our courses.
David Douglas –
course was good
Craig Upshall –
Focus on the controls more would be great. Course was very informative.
Nick Flora –
When i stepped away from the keyboard for a few moments, it said I had saved everything. It then sent me back to the beginning and had to restart the courses. There is no save feature that works. Other than that, decent course. Kind of long.
