Electrocuted: Death by Wire

Electrocuted: Death by Wire

There are so many machines that present risks. Any time you put yourself on a piece of equipment, you are risking your safety, and challenging death. Fortunately, there are safety procedures and guidelines that are specific to every machine, and, if followed, can preserve your safety and prevent an untimely death. However, many times these safety procedures are not followed carefully, and workers put themselves in harms way. For example, recently there have been stories of workers being electrocuted after coming in contact with wires while on a piece of equipment. Read this following recap of a worker who was electrocuted:

“A 69-year-old man died after being electrocuted by Hydro wires while working in a boom lift in La Prairie, Que. on Montreal’s South Shore.

It took several hours before rescue crews were finally able to extricate the man’s body safely.

Roussillon police were called to the scene around 1:45 p.m.

The man was working aloft, outside La Belle Époque seniors home, at the time of the accident.

Officials with the CSST, Quebec’s workplace safety board, are working with investigators.

Officers are speaking with witnesses to find out what happened.

By 9 p.m., police removed the security perimeter.”

Unfortunately, this man was working in a boom lift too close to Hydro wires. Whether it happened because of lack of training, or because of carelessness, this accident could have been prevented. Being electrocuted is far too common among workers, especially those who work in boom lifts, cranes, and other equipment that become aloft.

Recently, we trained workers on site in Atlanta on the use of boom lifts. Training can prevent accidents like this from occurring, and we have the training that you need. Whether it’s onsite, online, or a kit for the classroom, this training can help you and your workers remain clear of accidents, and, ultimately, from being electrocuted.
