Train the Trainer Certification
The Train the Trainer option is used to certify a trainer to teach others using the included training kit. It incorporates the online course with an additional train the trainer module, as well as the training kit. This option results in an regulation-aligned lifetime trainer certification from Hard Hat Training. This certification is not company-specific, meaning you can take it with you should you change employers.
Why Do I Need EM 385-1-1 8-Hour Safety Training?
In line with regulations, anyone who works on a USACE worksite must receive training prior to carrying out any of their duties, whether they are a contractor or a federal employee. All USACE employees must obtain an EM 385 certification by taking the training required by their respective positions.
During this training, we will provide you with a general understanding of the safety principles for each topic included in this course. This is an overview training. While it provides general awareness of the topics discussed, we do not cover every topic in the EM 385-1-1 manual. In order to be considered certified, you must take any additional trainings as required by your jobsite.

What does the EM 385-1-1 8-Hour do?
The Corp proclaims their mission to be to “deliver vital public and military engineering services; partnering in peace and war to strengthen our nations’ security, energize the economy and reduce risks from disasters.” Most notably, it is responsible for building and maintaining infrastructure and providing military facilities in areas where they are needed.
What training is required for my duties?
Various USACE trainings are available for the worksite, depending on your assigned duties. Site Safety Health Officers (SSHO) are required to complete the 40-hour EM 385 training and must use this 8-hour course as a refresher training annually. Managers and supervisors who are responsible for leading teams must complete the 24-hour EM 385 course. Finally, workers and contractors are responsible for completing the 16-hour EM 385 course.
Is this 8-hour training only a refresher training?
Yes, more extensive training is required when beginning your USACE duties, depending on what they are. This training is intended to only be a refresher training for those who have already completed a longer training.
How is the 16-hour training different from the 8-hour training?
The 16-hour course fulfills the training requirements for contractors and federal employees working on military projects. It is designed to introduce learners to the safety standards contained in the EM 385-1-1 manual published by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). On the other hand, the 8-hour training is for SSHOs who are trying to obtain their yearly refresher training.
How does EM 385 training differ from an OSHA training on the same topics?
While these trainings are much the same and contain the same principles, EM 385 standards are typically much stricter. For this reason, OSHA courses are not approved for training USACE employees.
