The world moves at a fast pace around us, and we all struggle at least once trying to keep up with it. At any moment, we can hit a wall and struggle with our mental health. This can be caused by underlying medical conditions or through every day events through home, work, family, friends, etc.
There are many things you can do to help you with your mental health and we will be going over some things that you can do that will help.
1. Appreciate Yourself: It can be hard to do this at times, especially if you have so much pressure to act a certain way, or do things in a specific manner. Yet, it can be done. Try and only say kind things about yourself, respect yourself (as you deserve it), and try and remove self-criticism all together. Do things you enjoy that will make you feel accomplished of it, such as making time for any hobbies you have been neglecting.
2. Caring After Your Body: Taking care of yourself and your body is a huge thing that can help with your mental health. By eating healthy and nutritious foods, not smoking, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and exercising will help keep your body functioning at its highest potential. It can also increase and stimulate your serotonin and dopamine levels in your brain to help you feel happier.
3. Encompass Yourself with Positive/Good People: Those who have social and family connections tend to be happier and even healthier overall than those who surround themselves with people who put them down, or even those who lack a social/family connection. You can always find ways to improve this by making plans with family and friends, or find places to meet new people. This could be at a dance class, support group, book club, or others.
4. Get Help when Needed: Getting help is not a sign of weakness and it never will be. In fact, it is a sign of strength as it can be ten times more difficult to do than not doing anything at all or taking what seems to be the easiest path. Those who seek help, and get the appropriate care have a higher change at recovering from mental illness and can live a happier and healthier life.
There are many other steps, and some can work better than others for you as an individual. You can always find other steps or safe methods that can be useful for you with a quick internet search or you can visit https://www.uhs.umich.edu/tenthings for more methods.
