Why Do I Need Maritime Fall Protection Safety Training?

In line with regulations, anyone who operates in the maritime industry must receive training prior to working at heights. Requirements for refresher training related to fall protection or other processes are very specific. Most other equipment doesn’t have such specific requirements, but it’s wise to follow the same guidelines.

When it comes to refresher training, the standards in some instances are very specific: operators must be re-evaluated every three years to see if they are still competent to operate the equipment. Best practices say to apply this same rule to all types of equipment. A so-called “free-pass” cannot be awarded based on experience, age, or time on the job. The extent of the evaluation is to be determined by the employer but should include a written and practical examination that prove continued competency.

What is the difference between fall prevention and fall restraint systems?

    arrow icon

Fall prevention systems are measures like rails and physical barriers that prevent employees from falling. Fall restraint systems are measures taken to restrict employees from reaching edges and falling. Fall restraint systems usually take the form of a lanyard attached to an anchorage point that only extends as far as the edge of wherever they are working to keep them from moving beyond the edge.

How are the standards different between the Maritime industry and other industries for fall protection?

    arrow icon

The maritime industry there are only small differences in standards compared to other industries. For example, the fall arrest system standard point distance is 1.2 meters, which is less than the standard 1.5 meters of the construction industry. Certain body wear used in other industries are not used within the maritime industry as well. Otherwise, the standards are relatively the same.

Are aerial lifts used in the maritime industry? Do they require fall protection?
