Health & Safety Programs-OSHA’s Guidlines

At long last, OSHA updated the guidelines for safety and health programs. What does that mean for your company?

Back in 1989

When OSHA originally published these guidelines, there were four components: management commitment and employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training. However, the world has changed over the last thirty years. For example, the economy, the workplace, and even safety and health issues have evolved. These changes have made the need for updated safety and health program guidelines that much more pressing.

What’s Different

Instead of those four components, the OSHA groups the new practices into seven categories: management leadership, employee participation, hazard identification and assessment, hazard prevention and control, education and training, program evaluation and improvement, and coordination for multi-employer worksites.

The new guidelines were written with proactivity in mind. Thus, each category contains action items that help safety personnel to develop a thorough program without getting overwhelmed.  The action items encourage all employees to get involved in each aspect of the program. It also invites safety personnel to be more transparent in communicating hazards to their employees.

The Numbers

If you have any doubts about these changes, consider these statistics. In a study of small businesses, implementing OSHA’s recommended practices lead to a 52% decrease in workers’ compensation claims. Also, it led to an 80% decrease in the cost per claim, and an 87% decrease in average time lost. (OSHA)

How Does the Training Kit Work?

Have an employee use the kit’s main PowerPoint presentation to instruct the trainees. (any person you, the employer, deems competent may conduct this). Distribute the written exam to each trainee individually. Gather the completed exams and use the included answer key to grade them.

We use a passing grade of 80% as a guideline, but as the employer you are free to adjust it however you like. Administer the practical exam to each trainee. (We suggest correcting any mistakes and having the trainee initial the edit on the practical exam sheet.) Use the included template to print certificates and wallet cards for those who passed. Note the expiration date and be sure to re-train and re-certify before then.
