Why Do I Need Active Shooter Training?
An active shooter is any individual who is actively shooting or attempting to shoot people in a crowded or constrained environment. Incidents involving active shooters can quickly escalate or change without any warning. During the chaos, anyone can play a significant role in reducing the effects of the incident.
Active shooter situations are unpredictable and dynamic. When it comes to the victims of an active shooter, there is rarely any pattern or method to the selection. Because of this, you should be emotionally and physically prepared to handle an active shooter situation in any public place. This will also significantly reduce the likelihood of injury and fatality, especially since these situations are over in an average of 10 to 15 minutes and, normally, before law enforcement reaches the scene.
Do Standards Require Active Shooter Preparedness Training?
OSHA does not have any specific standards regarding active shooter training. However, they do acknowledge the value of employee preparedness when it comes to active shooter situations. Under the General Duty Clause, however, OSHA does require employers to maintain a safe and healthful work environment for their employees. This includes avoiding workplace violence such as active shooter situations.
Due to this, employers must provide their employees with safety procedures and training courses. These resources should help to teach employees about what to do in an active shooter situation.
What To Do In An Active Shooter Situation
One of the best-known response plans for active shooter situations is run, hide, fight. This specific program has been widely adopted as the standard protocol for active shooter events. We are not suggesting that the actions run, hide, and fight be taken in that order. Sometimes, it might be safer to perform one before another.
Make your best determination of what is happening and which of the options below will provide the greatest degree of security for you. Running, hiding, or fighting could be an appropriate initial response, depending on the circumstances. Run when it’s safe to run. Hide when it’s safe to hide. Fight if you have no other options.
Run
If you have access to an escape path, attempt to evacuate yourself and others. There may be routes mapped out for you; use them if they are safe. If not, think of another way out that keeps you away from the area where the shooter may be. Leave your belongings behind. Your purse, jacket, and cell phone are not as important as your life.
Hide
Sometimes, evacuating isn’t possible. Perhaps the shooter has blocked the nearest exit, or maybe you don’t even know where the nearest exit is. Whatever the reason, if you cannot evacuate, then you should hide if it is safest. Your hiding place should be where the active shooter is less likely to find you. Find an inconspicuous spot that is out of the normal flow of foot traffic. Try to find a hiding place that would protect you if shots are fired in your direction.
Fight
You should never seek out an active shooter and instigate a confrontation. Only resort to fighting if you or others are in immediate danger. If there are other people with you who do not want to fight back, do not force them to do so. If you are in this situation, your first step is to try to remain calm. Many people who thought they could never be able to defend themselves or others have done so when needed. You can, too. Remember your survival mindset and fully commit to defending your life with physical action.
