What is a “Fit Test” For Work?

A Fit Test is a way for employers to ensure that their employees have the correct fit for protective respirators. A respirator needs to form a proper seal over the nose and mouth to protect the employee from certain hazards, such as breathing in fine particles that can damage the airway. Without a proper fit, the respirator is practically useless.

The Fit Test is performed by a trained professional who can give either a qualitative (QLFT) or quantitative (QNFT) test. The QLFT tests a respirator by evaluating the employee’s senses when an irritant is present, whereas the QNFT uses an actual instrument that can detect if there is a leak somewhere around the respirator’s seal. In addition to the fit being tested, it is important for the employee to know how to properly don the respirator.

Who Can Perform Respirator Fit Testing?

Fit Test administrators do not need a special certification or license, but do need to meet some requirements established by OSHA. There should only be one administrator of the Fit Test per worksite so that testing and training are consistent for all employees. The requirements for this administrator are:

  • Understand OSHA’s requirements for Fit Testing
  • Know all the types of respirators in use by employees and how to test them
  • Know the hazards that employees will need a respirator for and how employees can recognize and control for said hazards
  • Be “suitably trained” in Fit Testing take proper care of testing equipment

How Do I Become a Certified Respirator Fit Tester?

Someone can become a certified Fit Tester by completing an OSHA-aligned training course. These courses include a classroom training requirement as well as knowledge testing, but if the training is properly completed, certification can be completed in as little as a few hours. Respirator Fit Testing training can be done in-person or online as long as the course meets OSHA’s standards.

Is Respirator Training Required By OSHA?

Respirator training is required by OSHA depending on the hazards of the job site. As well as requiring the training, OSHA also requires that:

  • Employers establish a respiratory protection
  • Employers designate a qualified administrator
  • Respirators, training, and medical evaluations are provided to the employee at no cost

OSHA goes to great lengths to ensure that employees who may come into contact with workplace hazards have every possible resource available to prevent accidents or injuries caused by improper respirator use or training. These standards also protect employers from liability as long as they adhere to the standards designated by OSHA.
